Does your office need a day porter?
Nightly cleaning resets the office. A day porter keeps it there. Here is how to tell whether yours is the kind of office that needs both.
By 2 p.m. in a busy office, the nightly clean is a memory. The kitchen counter has coffee rings, the second floor restroom is out of paper towels, and the conference room that had a client meeting at 10 still has the cups on the table. Nobody is going to do anything about it until tonight, and the next client meeting is at 3.
That gap is what a day porter is for.
What a porter actually does
A day porter works rounds during business hours. The rhythm depends on the office, but a typical half day looks like this:
- 8 a.m. Restrooms checked and restocked, kitchen set for the day, reception and conference rooms wiped down before anyone arrives.
- Mid-morning Rounds through the floor: trash that filled early, spills, the dishwasher run, delivery boxes broken down.
- Midday Kitchen reset after lunch, which in most offices is the single messiest hour of the day. Restrooms again.
- Early afternoon Conference rooms turned over between meetings, high-touch surfaces wiped, supply closet restocked for the night crew.
A porter also handles the things that come up: a coffee spill on the carpet, a client arriving early, a package room that overflowed. The value is not the task list. It is that someone is there.
Signs your office needs one
- More than 40 people on site most days. Below that, a nightly clean usually holds until evening. Above it, the kitchen and restrooms cannot.
- Clients or candidates visit during the day. The conference room has to be ready at 3 p.m., not just at 8.
- A real kitchen. If people cook lunch, someone needs to reset it at 1.
- Coworking or shared floors. Members notice restroom stock and kitchen state more than anything else about the space.
- Events. A porter on site during a client event means the restroom does not run out at the worst moment.
What it does not replace
A porter is not a nightly clean. They keep the office at its 8 a.m. state; they do not vacuum every floor, clean every desk, and reset every restroom from scratch. Offices sometimes try to save money by running a porter instead of nightly service, and end up with a tidy kitchen and a dirty floor. The two are a pair.
What it costs in New York
Breezy porters are W-2 employees, the same as our nightly crews, and they are priced the same way, by the hour. A half day porter, four hours a day Monday through Friday, runs about $2,500 to $3,300 a month. A full day, eight hours, is about $5,100 to $6,600. The part nobody puts in the brochure
A good porter becomes part of the office. They know which conference room the CEO uses, that the second floor restroom runs out of towels by 11, and that the Tuesday catering leaves the kitchen in a state. Because they are an employee and not a rotating contractor, they are the same person on Thursday as on Monday. That is the whole difference between a porter your team relies on and one they do not notice.
