What a nightly office clean should actually include in NYC.
Every cleaning company says nightly. Almost none of them define it. Here is the room by room version, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

"Nightly cleaning" is the most quoted and least defined service in New York. Ask three companies what it includes and you will get three different lists, two of which were written by the sales team. So here is ours, room by room, including the parts that get skipped when nobody is watching.
Use it to compare quotes. Use it to check on your current crew. Use it to build your own checklist. We are not precious about it.
Before anything: the walk-through decides the list
A nightly scope is not a menu. It is built from what your office actually is: how many people, how many restrooms, whether the kitchen is a coffee station or a second cafeteria, whether the floors are wood, tile, or a rug someone loves. A company that quotes you without seeing the space is quoting a square-footage formula, and the formula does not know about the pantry.
Workstations and open plan
- Trash and recycling emptied at every station, liners replaced, recycling sorted to the building's rules.
- Desk surfaces wiped, around papers and equipment, never through them. If a desk is buried, it gets skipped and noted.
- High-touch points disinfected: shared table edges, drawer pulls, light switches, door handles.
- Chairs pushed in. It sounds trivial until you walk into an office where nobody did it.
Usually skipped: the phone booths and huddle rooms. Small rooms nobody owns are the first thing a rushed crew drops. They should be on the list by name.
Conference rooms
- Table wiped and disinfected, chairs squared, AV surfaces dusted.
- Glass walls and doors wiped, both sides, fingerprints and whiteboard ghosts.
- Whiteboards left exactly as found. Erasing someone's roadmap is a firing offense in most offices.
- Cups, plates, and catering leftovers cleared and returned to the kitchen.
Kitchen and pantry
This is where a nightly clean earns its money and where most contracts are vaguest.
- Counters, sink, faucet, and backsplash cleaned and disinfected.
- Dishwasher loaded and run, or emptied, depending on your rule.
- Microwave and coffee machine exteriors wiped, interiors weekly.
- Fridge exterior and handle disinfected. Interior on a schedule you set, with the Friday purge you have been meaning to do.
- Floor swept and mopped, because the pantry floor is the dirtiest in the office.
- Trash and recycling out, liners replaced.
Usually skipped: the inside of the microwave and the fridge handle. One is gross, the other is the most touched surface in the building.
Restrooms
- Toilets, urinals, sinks, and counters cleaned and disinfected, product left to dwell time.
- Mirrors and partitions wiped, dispensers and door hardware disinfected.
- Paper, soap, and seat covers restocked. Never a morning without paper towels.
- Floor mopped with disinfectant, drains checked.
- Trash out, liners replaced.
Restrooms are the single largest source of office complaints and the fastest way to judge a cleaning company. Walk into yours at 4 p.m. If it is fine, the nightly crew is doing their job. If it is not, you may need a day porter, not a new nightly crew.
Floors
- Wood and hard floors dust mopped, then damp mopped with product matched to the finish.
- Rugs and carpet vacuumed, edges included.
- Entry mats vacuumed or shaken. In winter, salt is the enemy of every floor in New York.
Usually skipped: edges and under things. A floor that is clean in the middle and gray at the baseboards is a floor cleaned by someone in a hurry.
Reception and common areas
- Reception desk and seating wiped and disinfected.
- Glass entry doors and push plates cleaned.
- Plants dusted. Yes, really. It is the one thing visitors touch with their eyes.
High-touch disinfection, every visit
This should not be an add-on. Handles, switches, elevator buttons, faucet levers, shared keyboards on request, and pantry pulls get an EPA-registered disinfectant applied to its dwell time. Spraying and wiping immediately is theater. The product has to sit.
The things that are not nightly
A nightly clean holds the line. It does not reset the building. These belong on a separate schedule and should be quoted separately:
| Task | Cadence |
|---|---|
| Deep clean (vents, baseboards, behind and under) | Quarterly |
| Interior window and partition detail | Monthly or quarterly |
| Carpet and upholstery extraction | Twice a year |
| Fridge interior purge | Weekly or as set |
| Full-office disinfection | Seasonal, or after an illness |
How to tell if you are getting it
Walk in at 8 a.m. and check four things: the pantry floor, the restroom paper, the conference glass, and the baseboards. If all four are right, the rest almost certainly is. If two are wrong, send the list above to your cleaning company and ask which ones are in the contract. If they are not sure, that is your answer.
